Planning for a child's education

A child's education has two features that shape the whole plan: a cost that tends to rise faster than general prices, and a date that cannot be moved. Together they decide how the mix should work.

Of all the goals people plan for, a child’s education is the one with the firmest deadline. This article is about what that does to the plan — the mechanism and the trade-offs. The arithmetic of pricing a course and finding the monthly amount lives in the child education planner and the education planning page; this is the depth beneath them.

A cost that rises and a date that does not move

Two things make education different. First, education costs have tended to rise faster than a general basket of prices, so the figure worth planning for is usually higher than today’s fee. Second, and more important, the date is fixed: a child starts a course when they start, and you cannot defer it a couple of years to let a market recover. That combination — a moving cost and an immovable date — is what shapes everything else.

Why the fixed deadline changes everything

Because the date cannot move, the money you will need soon must not be exposed to a fall it has no time to recover from before the fees are due. This is the general short-horizon principle: as the start year approaches, the money earmarked for the nearest fees belongs in steadier assets, so a bad year just before enrolment cannot shrink what you are about to spend.

How the horizon sets the mix

The years you have left do the choosing. While the child is young and the course is far off, the horizon can support more growth-oriented assets; as the start year nears, the mix moves steadier to protect what you have built. It is a gradual glide, not a switch flipped at the last minute — you step down the risk on the money you will need first, while later years’ fees can stay invested for growth a little longer.

If the course is abroad

A foreign degree adds one more moving part: the fees are in another currency, so the rupee cost can shift with the exchange rate as well as with the fees themselves. Some people plan for this with a slice of international exposure — funds that invest abroad — which carries its own currency, tax and regulatory caveats. It is a mechanism to be aware of, not a recommendation — the point is simply that an overseas cost is not a rupee cost.

Working out your numbers

This article carries no figures, because the return that would turn a plan into a promise is an assumption, not a fact — and no plan can promise the target is reached, because markets move. To price the course, age it for inflation and find the monthly amount, use the child education planner, and the education page to frame it. Start when you can; time is the input you cannot buy back later.

This is education, not advice

This article explains categories and mechanics. It does not name a scheme, does not rank anything and does not tell you what to buy. Common questions

Planning a child's education fund

Why plan for more than today's fees?

Because education costs have tended to rise faster than general prices, the figure worth planning for is usually higher than today's fee. The planner ages the cost forward to the year the course starts so the target is realistic.

Why does the fixed start date matter so much?

A course begins when it begins, so you cannot defer it to let a market recover. Money needed for the nearest fees therefore moves into steadier assets as the start year approaches, so a late fall cannot shrink what you are about to spend.

Is the target amount certain if I follow the plan?

No. Markets move, so no plan can promise the target is reached. What a plan does is set a realistic figure, put a monthly amount toward it, and reduce risk on the money as the deadline nears.
