Finding forgotten folios with MITRA

Folios get forgotten: an old address, a parent’s paperwork, an investment from years ago. MITRA is the official tool for finding inactive and unclaimed ones.

MITRA is a search tool for mutual fund folios that have gone quiet. SEBI required it in a circular of 12 February 2025, and it is hosted by the two mutual fund registrars, CAMS and KFintech, so one search covers folios across fund houses.

What counts as an inactive folio

A folio is treated as inactive when it still holds units but has had no transaction started by the investor for ten years. The units in it still belong to the investor; they have simply stopped being looked after.

Who it helps

  • Someone who invested years ago and has lost track of the folio.
  • A family going through a relative’s papers after a death, looking for holdings nobody listed.

MITRA is reached from MF Central’s inactive-folios link. Enter the details the tool asks for; the more of them match the record, the better the search. For folios that are not inactive, the Consolidated Account Statement is the quicker way to see everything held under a PAN.
